Residents Live, Work and Play at Tesoro Viejo - Meet Courtney Sherritt
At Tesoro Viejo, it’s our residents who make this place feel like home. Drawn to the warmth and connection of this community, Courtney and her family have found a place where neighbors truly show up for one another. After Tesoro Viejo recently hosted and sponsored the American Heart Association’s Central Valley Heart & Stroke Walk, their story feels especially meaningful and a reminder of the strength, support, and everyday kindness that define life here at Tesoro Viejo. Here, families connect, and special moments are always close by.
Q: How long have you lived at Tesoro Viejo, and why did you choose this community?
A: Our family has lived in Tesoro Viejo for one year this October. We chose Tesoro Viejo, because we came from living on an Air Force base and loved the close community feel that Tesoro Viejo echoed. We had been very invested in our previous school that was linked to the base, so Hillside Elementary is something that we were and are very excited about.
Q: Describe what it is like to live, work and play at Tesoro Viejo.
A: Tesoro Viejo is wonderful because it offers something for everyone in my family. It has hiking trails for my outdoor-loving son, who has found so many praying mantises here! My dogs love to go on walks here. My girls love the pool, and got to take swim lessons from a neighbor in the community. My older son has found robotics at school, and also likes the food truck nights.
I recently started working at the school part-time, but in my time on the weekends I will also take pictures.
My husband works in Madera, so the commute is fantastic, and the pool has become a time where he and our kids really spend time together.
The landscape here is beautiful, so it’s been really amazing to see how our whole family has blossomed here.
Q: Choose one word to describe the vibe in your neighborhood.
A: Relaxed
Q: How do you “play” at Tesoro Viejo?
A: I spend most of my time walking, my kids like to be outside! We have two dogs and they love to walk on all of the fantastic trails. Now that the weather has changed, we are spending lots of time collecting leaves, rocks, and other random “treasures” on long walks.
Q: What’s your favorite amenity in the community, and why?
A: Our favorite amenity would have to be the pool - this summer my kids went every day! They would wait for my husband to get home and then off they would go. It was absolutely their routine, and I loved it because they brought me home pizza from the Salt Box once a week!
Q: If you had to describe the overall atmosphere of the community in just three words, what would they be?
A: Family, communicative and active.
Q: If you were to give a tour of the community amenities to someone who has never been here, what would be your must-see stops?
A: My must-see stops would be the pool, walking trails and I love our school and I believe so firmly in our teachers and I want to communicate that loudly to our community. I believed that as a parent last year, and I think that needs to be spoken about more. We have a fantastic asset right in the middle of our community, in Hillside Elementary!
Q: What does your typical work day look like?
A: Right now I am working as an aide at the school from 8:00 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. and then on the weekend or evening hours I will do photography.
I recently went back to work after taking 8 years off, so that was a big change. I am really happy to be working with students in our community and getting to know more families!
Q: What are a few exciting things you plan to do this holiday season?
A: Honestly not much, we will be home for the holidays. LuluBelle is excited to be singing at the tree lighting with her class, and we love to look at all the decorations in the community. The kids like to see Santa and we bake sugar cookies as a family.
My husband will be working and I think my kids are most excited to be able to sleep in. We also enjoy the light show at the Fresno Zoo.
Q: Tesoro Viejo is a proud sponsor of the American Heart Association’s Central Valley Heart & Stroke Walk. What is your connection to this cause and why is it so meaningful to you and your family?
A: We are so grateful to Tesoro Viejo for being a sponsor of the Heart Walk! This year LuluBelle was so proud to be able to walk her own survivor lap. LuluBelle was born with complex congenital heart defects and is pacemaker-powered. She is our heart warrior. Living in a community that rallied around raising awareness about CHD made LuluBelle feel supported and encouraged. The trauma of open-heart surgeries and many procedures is often very discouraging and difficult, but for her to feel so strongly supported by an entire community was truly powerful. It’s a day she won’t forget, and we can’t thank the American Heart Association or Tesoro Viejo enough.
