One of the things that makes Tesoro Viejo such a special place is the natural beauty of the area. At Sierra Foothill Conservancy (SFC), we work to protect lands in our region so they can continue to be enjoyed by generations to come. Over the last 25 years, we have permanently protected over 50,000 acres of land in Madera, Fresno, Mariposa, and Merced counties.
In 2017, we partnered with Tesoro Viejo to establish the beautiful Wetlands Preserve. This 188-acre Preserve of grassland corridors winding through the streams of Tesoro Viejo protects native wildlife and plants, special-status species, and cultural and water resources. The Preserve also provides valuable open spaces, natural resource benefits, and scenic vistas for everyone to enjoy. A variety of wildlife species, known to forage and breed in the region, include California tiger salamander, Western spadefoot toad, Western pond turtle, Swainson’s hawk, and Western burrowingowl. As a friendly reminder, due to the sensitive nature of the plant, animal, and avian species in the area, the wetlands inside the fenced area are not publicly accessible and should be enjoyed only by using the trail and park system provided to preserve the scenic and ecological value of this special place.
Land Managers
As land managers, SFC holds the conservation easement on the Preserve, which means that we can ensure that the conservation values of the Preserve are protected forever. We know how important it is to thoughtfully protect Tesoro Viejo’s physical, biological, cultural, and community values. We tend the Preserve by maintaining and enhancing the abundance and diversity of native plants species, reducing fire hazards, preventing erosion, and controlling or eliminating invasive plants.
Outdoor Education
We’re excited to show Tesoro Viejo residents our conservation work and abundant natural beauty that’s right outside your door. Beginning this Fall, SFC will host guided nature walks on Tesoro Viejo’s beautiful trails with themes including birding, identifying native plants, and learning about local wildlife. As residents of Tesoro Viejo, you automatically have a supporting membership in SFC. We also offer trail rides, birding, outdoor yoga, and more. To sign up for our hikes and events, please visit our website at www.sierrafoothill.org and look at the engagement opportunities section. You can also follow us on Facebook and Instagram for the latest information on events in the region. We look forward to seeing you on the trails!
