They came. They laced up their shoes. They logged thousands of steps while passing through gently rolling hills and looking over scenic vistas. And at the end of the day, the Tesoro Viejo team raised more than $15,000 for the American Heart Association, participating in the 2018 Heart Walk hosted October 27th at Tesoro Viejo for the third year running.
Team Tesoro Viejo walkers and runners were joined by more than 2,200 Central Valley residents who together raised a record-breaking $362,528 in support of AHA research initiatives for treating and preventing cardiovascular disease and stroke. The Heart Walk, which Tesoro Viejo began hosting in 2016, is the largest local event for the association. This year marked its 26th annual, and included multiple events, including the 5k Lawyers Have Heart Run and 2-mile Central Valley Heart & Stroke Walk.
But walking and running weren’t the only way to get involved. Tesoro Viejo also hosted a health expo at Town Center featuring booths on wellness, a kid’s zone with family-fun activities, and lots of healthy snack samples. Attendees could get a taste for Tesoro Viejo’s own commitment to vitality and a healthy lifestyle, previewing the trail system that will wind throughout the community’s 1,600 acres, which includes nearly 200 acres of permanently preserved open space and access to the San Joaquin River.
Tesoro Viejo Development President Brent McCaffrey was among the walkers raising funds for healthy hearts. “Tesoro Viejo is a natural fit to host the Heart Walk as a culture of health and wellness is the foundation of our community. The community has been thoughtfully planned with over 15 miles of walking and biking trails. Hosting the Heart Walk gives us a wonderful opportunity to share our support for good heart health,” he said.
The American Heart Association says walking is the simplest positive change individuals can make to effectively improve their heart health, because it’s free, easy, and has the lowest drop-out rate of any exercise. Research shows that walking as little as 30 minutes each day can help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, the number 1 and number 5 killers of Americans, respectively.
At Tesoro Viejo, residents of Hillside Village will have the opportunity to walk their kids to Hillside School, and then meander over to Axis Coffee Bar & Eatery for their favorite coffee or latte. Not to mention enjoy miles of walking, hiking and biking trails. It’s all about enjoying the great outdoors and the beautiful landscape. And living a long, healthy life, unprecedented.
